The Murder Game Meme



You know the script. You wake up in a place you've never seen before, with a whole bunch of complete strangers and there's a mysterious voice or a mascot or what have you ready to let you know how things are going to work around here.

The rules are simple: You're trapped here, with no hope of release or rescue. You've been provided with all the basic necessities you need to live comfortably, and all you have to do is settle down and live out the rest of your days here in peace. But if you can't do that -- if you're really so desperate to escape that you'll do anything -- then there's one teeny tiny thing you have to do first.

All you have to do is kill somebody.

But it's not quite that simple. Every death will be followed by a period of investigation, followed by a trial in which the survivors will attempt to solve the mystery and out the culprit. If the survivors guess correctly and out the culprit, the killer is executed and life goes on. But if the survivors guess wrong, then the culprit is free as a bird and everyone else is executed.

Even with the promise of freedom, can you really bring yourself to kill so many other people?

Settings

1. High School A classic! Doesn't matter if you're too old or too young to be in high school -- you've been enrolled and the only way for you to graduate is to kill a fellow student. But hey, the faculties are nice!
2. Tropical Island Weren't you just hankering for a nice tropical vacation? No? Too bad! You're going to have a nice sunny vacation at the beach and if you don't like it, just kill someone and go home. Simple!
3. Prison It doesn't matter if you don't remember committing any crime; you've been tried and found guilty of something or other and now you can go ahead and rot away in jail. If you ever want to see the sunlight again, better put that criminal mind to good use and get rid of your inmates.
4. Wildcard! None of the above scratch your murder itch? Go wild and come up with your own setting!


Downtime

1. Excuse Me, Who Are You? You've just woken up in this weird place and you have no idea what's going on. But hey -- maybe this stranger's more informed than you. Or maybe you can put your heads together and investigate what's going on.
2. Social Link Go! Well, if you're going to be stuck in here for however long, you might as well get to know the people stuck in here with you. You've got plenty of rooms to explore together and there's enough to do to keep you occupied. How do you plan on passing time without killing each other?
3. Vending Machine Woes Somewhere in this place there's a mysterious vending machine that spits out all manner of bizarre items and occasionally dispenses items that belong to you and the other people trapped here. You've got a fat stack of tokens and nothing to lose.
4. Wildcard! GO WILD AND BE FREE (or as free as you can be here, anyways)


PUTTING THE MURDER IN MURDER GAME

1. Motive Your mysterious overseer has decided there's not nearly enough murder going on and so they've ~helpfully~ given you a little push to do the deed. Maybe one of your loved ones is in danger, maybe they're offering more money than you could ever dream of or they're threatening to reveal your deepest darkest secrets. Whatever is it, would you kill for it?
2. Murder WELL APPARENTLY, YES. Are you a killer or are you being killed? Either way, someone's not walking away from this alive.
3. Body Discovery Rise and shine, murdergame! It's a brand new day and someone's dead. Better get investigating!
4. Trial You know how this one goes. Line up all your evidence and sniff out the killer -- or sit there and sweat and hope no one works out you're the murderer. Will they go down with a confession or put up a fight?
5. Afterparty You've survived another trial, but more of your friends have died. Even without the executions, trials are a stressful enough affair. It's time to destress and lick your wounds and support each other.
6. Mastermind It's the end. It's time to uncover all the mysteries behind this murder game -- and find out just who trapped you here. Are they really an unconnected party, or is the mastermind someone among you...?
7. Freedom Just as it says -- you're finally free, but at what cost? Have those you love been returned to you, or are you still reduced to just those who made it to the end? Are you on your own, or is anyone here to help you? And more importantly, how the hell are you going to get home?

[ Mira Delacroix is generally quiet and tries her best to be helpful, even during trials. Initially, she's hesitant to participate, but as the weeks go on she's more outspoken, more determined. Memories are difficult for her, and while she very much wants to withdraw, she finds herself opening up. It's worse to isolate herself, after all.

During afterparties, she makes sure to take care of everyone, almost to the point of exhaustion. But it's fine. She's fine. And during the week, she's exploring, and if she sees someone she's close to upset by memories, or a death or punishment... she's there, too, making sure they've got what they need. ]

Violet Evergarden | Violet Evergarden

[ Lineface saberface child soldier who spent the first fourteen(ish) years of her life being used as a human weapon and now suddenly, the war's over and she has to be a civilian. She's slowly learning how to be A Real Girl and working as an Auto Memoir Doll, which involves ghostwriting for those who cannot write for themselves. She looks spooky and lineface but she's a good girl who's trying her best. Also, she has sick robot arms?? THEY'RE REALLY COOL ]

Palecat | Night in the Woods/Demontower

[The resident furry of the round, this small cat woman barley speaks, and when she does it's a strained croak. She seems to have no real name, her profile listing it as 'The Pale One' and her job as 'Demonslayer'.

While at first she seems very weak and sickly- unable to stay awake long, always tired, and honestly seeming to have very low blood sugar at all time- anyone that dares fight her will have quite a battle to deal with due to her speed and ferocity. Still, outside sparing she is quiet and a little awkward around all these strange creatures, but not against socializing]

chiyo sakura | gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun

[ chiyo sakura deserves none of this and coco is a monster. but here we are. she's a little timid around people she doesn't know, but otherwise friendly. she's really artistically talented and hopelessly in love with a bonehead named nozaki from back home. she's a sucker for anything of the romantic variety, really. also she's only 4'7"/145cm.

murdergame-wise, chiyo's too afraid to go anywhere near the dead bodies. she does try to help with investigations otherwise, and does a quick sketch of the evidence that she finds, which she always brings with her to the courtroom to illustrate what she's seen. she turns away during executions and is definitely not fine with any of this. outside of investigations and trials, she's usually in the art room or baking! ]

Grima | Fire Emblem (Awakening/Heroes/Echos)

[At first, outside the pale hair, the person listed as 'Grima' seems perfectly human- odd, since his profile lists him as a 'Dragon'. But the more someone watches the clearer it is that he is no human. Sharp teeth, blazing red eyes and an utter disdain for his fellow captives, he makes no effort to hide his nature, seeing as the profiles already outed him.

He often loudly denounces humanity as a whole, and is very self assured that he is better then such worms, and that any death should be expected. Yet oddly he hasn't killed anyone himself yet, even after all his threats- he has no friends, but he could be said to have people he calls his 'servants'. Basically anyone that tries to befriend him that he thinks are useful.

For all his eager evil though, there seems to be a deeper true rage in him. And resentment.]

jared kleinman | dear evan hansen

[Jared Kleinman has never taken anything seriously in his entire life and every other thing out of his mouth is a comment just on the wrong side of decent. He has a lot of bravado, but not a lot of actual courage, and will never ever refer to anyone as an actual "friend," even if he cares deeply about them. Definitely covering up his insecurities with memes.

At some point, he probably regained a cellphone and has been filming things "for the Vine."]

Okuyasu Nijimura | Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

[Okuyasu is a 16-year-old who's not too keen on forming close bonds with others at first, but after a short time he's the resident Dumb Teenager who will fight the mastermind (and he probably tried to on Day 1) and do Dumb Teenage Boy things. He's actually a good kid who always asking what he can do during investigations, particularly with body checking.

He's generally a sweet, if extremely emotional, guy who cares about the people that are nice to him, but there are moments where his temper gets the best of him and he makes impulsive choices, including punching culprits in the face.

He can also cook but good luck getting him to share his stuff with you.]

[Kyuubi has adjusted a bit. He's not surrounded by children anymore, so four feet of height and white shorts just don't fit the illusion anymore. (White slacks and a foot more make it okay, though.) Lucky him that he's even still able to control that aspect of his powers, considering the others here had complained about things being 'missing' or 'dulled'-- but of course, no such dulling of powers could happen to the most famous of youkai.

Even though he's sure... he's sure a mere human couldn't kill a youkai, he's still found himself needing to use his trickstery charms to make allies instead. After all... he doesn't want to see another pretty girl die. So this time he approaches Violet, both to charm and to know, to see what about her might be.... useful.]

[Yuzuki is your average outgoing and enthusiastic girl, with a take-charge attitude and her heart on her sleeve! Fittingly, her title is Straightforward. Likes: card games, fairy tales, friendship, Kazuki Kurebayashi. Dislikes: gossip, judgmental people, romantic tragedies, lies of omission.

If she regains any WIXOSS decks while she's here, she will try to battle literally everyone with them.

Yuzuki is impulsive and ruled entirely by her heart rather than her head, but she's just a normal teenager with normal teenage problems - she doesn't have any reason to hurt anyone here. Right?]

[Nanami much prefers Jabberwock island to this place, which is dusty and ivy-covered and full of half-ruined buildings, but at least there's still a monomono-machine…? No, that's no consolation at all. The monomono-machine is stupid.

But a gatcha game is still a game. Today the church-like building that stands at the centre of Murder Village is alive with the sound of the Champion Sleeper whaling the vending machine with her token stash, and if you peek within you can see the growing pile of items she's got. Right now she's staring at the latest roll, a large tube of something labelled…]

[Okuyasu scowls at him and stuffs his hands into his pockets.]

Yeah, so I don't have an idea what that thing is, okay?

[He's pretty dumb, but this guy doesn't have to be an asshole about it. He squints at the iPhone.]

So, like, is it a phone or a camera?

[ Mu isn't averse to all the new things that come with being in a human's body. Not all of them are equally enjoyable, but they're all definitely equally interesting. And one of the most interesting things is that strange little gacha machine in the building Mu's taken to calling the town hall. It pops out all manner of odd food and strange devices so she's on her way today to find out what else it's going to produce.

Oh! But there's already someone here. ]

Oh, good morning, Chiaki-chan! Did you already get something out of the machine?

[ Yuri looks up from her book, a little startled. Yes, that's definitely Portrait of Markov but she's less surprised to see it here and more surprised that Alice had bothered to remember her bringing it up. ]

Oh, Alice-san...! Y--yes, it's mine... but where did you find it? I'd looked and looked all through the library but they didn't have a single copy...

[ ... is how Violet has been addressing her this entire time and it doesn't look like she's fixing to stop now. But, what is different is how shaken she looks. As the weeks have gone by, not much has visibly gotten to Violet. Not body discoveries, executions... or motives. But this week, she's sat clutching the photo in her gloved hands and she looks liable to swipe at anyone who might be thinking of trying to take it from her. ]

[She nods, then considers: Violet is protecting hers even more aggressively then she was. Something that actually rattled her.

She couldn't ask her what it was, but she could at least make a gesture. So after a sigh she lays her's on the table and pushes it over so Violet can see. It's not a person, like many of the others. It's a village. Full of mostly cat people, like the Palecat herself. But a few other creatures as well: bird men and reptiles mostly, but not only.

[ As she does with most everyone on the island, when Kyuubi approaches her, Violet seems to look right through him. She doesn't look particularly busy (all she seems to be doing is eating) but there's a bit of a tightness to her lips that isn't usually there. But with how even her face and her tone is, it's hard to tell what that might mean. ]

... What sort of item is it?
