    The Murder Game Meme

You know the script. You wake up in a place you've never seen before, with a whole bunch of complete strangers and there's a mysterious voice or a mascot or what have you ready to let you know how things are going to work around here.

The rules are simple: You're trapped here, with no hope of release or rescue. You've been provided with all the basic necessities you need to live comfortably, and all you have to do is settle down and live out the rest of your days here in peace. But if you can't do that -- if you're really so desperate to escape that you'll do anything -- then there's one teeny tiny thing you have to do first.

All you have to do is kill somebody.

But it's not quite that simple. Every death will be followed by a period of investigation, followed by a trial in which the survivors will attempt to solve the mystery and out the culprit. If the survivors guess correctly and out the culprit, the killer is executed and life goes on. But if the survivors guess wrong, then the culprit is free as a bird and everyone else is executed.

Even with the promise of freedom, can you really bring yourself to kill so many other people?

tl;dr: it's a murdergame meme. TIME TO HAVE A BIG OL' MURDERGAME BLAST.

    Settings
      1. High School A classic! Doesn't matter if you're too old or too young to be in high school -- you've been enrolled and the only way for you to graduate is to kill a fellow student. But hey, the faculties are nice!
      2. Tropical Island Weren't you just hankering for a nice tropical vacation? No? Too bad! You're going to have a nice sunny vacation at the beach and if you don't like it, just kill someone and go home. Simple!
      3. Prison It doesn't matter if you don't remember committing any crime; you've been tried and found guilty of something or other and now you can go ahead and rot away in jail. If you ever want to see the sunlight again, better put that criminal mind to good use and get rid of your inmates.
      4. Mall A huge mall stuffed full of stores, places to eat and all the regular amenities like deadbolted doors and the threat of death. It's like Black Friday but even worse because you can't leave and all the rest of the shoppers might actually kill you for real this time.
      5. City Holy shit, you've got the run of a whole city this time around! Maybe with all this room to keep out of each other's way, you'll be able to make sure no one starts killing people. But probably not.
      6. Cruise Boat YOU'RE ON A BOAT, MOTHERFUCKER. The accommodation is all five star, even if there's no one around to act as wait staff. The only snag is that you still have this whole murder thing hanging over your head – but on the plus side, they have those little drinks with the umbrellas in, so...
      7. Space Station THE FINAL FRONTIER... Maybe you're familiar with space stations like this or maybe all this future tech is fascinating to you. Not like it matters either way, of course, because you won't be getting out of here unless you lay down a murder on someone.
      8. Wildcard! None of the above scratch your murder itch? Go wild and come up with your own setting!

    Downtime
      1. Excuse Me, Who Are You? You've just woken up in this weird place and you have no idea what's going on. But hey -- maybe this stranger's more informed than you. Or maybe you can put your heads together and investigate what's going on.
      2. Social Link Go! Well, if you're going to be stuck in here for however long, you might as well get to know the people stuck in here with you. You've got plenty of rooms to explore together and there's enough to do to keep you occupied. How do you plan on passing time without killing each other?
      3. Vending Machine Woes Somewhere in this place there's a mysterious vending machine that spits out all manner of bizarre items and occasionally dispenses items that belong to you and the other people trapped here. You've got a fat stack of tokens and nothing to lose.
      4. The Corners of My Mind So as it turns out, your lovely hosts have been fiddling with your memories. Maybe you're just discovering this now or maybe you've had a particularly upsetting memory regain you're dealing with.
      4. Wildcard! GO WILD AND BE FREE (or as free as you can be here, anyways)

PUTTING THE MURDER IN MURDER GAME
      1. Motive Your mysterious overseer has decided there's not nearly enough murder going on and so they've ~helpfully~ given you a little push to do the deed. Maybe one of your loved ones is in danger, maybe they're offering more money than you could ever dream of or they're threatening to reveal your deepest darkest secrets. Whatever is it, would you kill for it?
      2. Murder WELL APPARENTLY, YES. Are you a killer or are you being killed? Either way, someone's not walking away from this alive.
      3. Body Discovery Rise and shine, murdergame! It's a brand new day and someone's dead. Better get investigating!
      4. Trial You know how this one goes. Line up all your evidence and sniff out the killer -- or sit there and sweat and hope no one works out you're the murderer. Will they go down with a confession or put up a fight?
      5. Afterparty You've survived another trial, but more of your friends have died. Even without the executions, trials are a stressful enough affair. It's time to destress and lick your wounds and support each other.
      6. Mastermind It's the end. It's time to uncover all the mysteries behind this murder game -- and find out just who trapped you here. Are they really an unconnected party, or is the mastermind someone among you...?
      7. Freedom Just as it says -- you're finally free, but at what cost? Have those you love been returned to you, or are you still reduced to just those who made it to the end? Are you on your own, or is anyone here to help you? And more importantly, how the hell are you going to get home?
      8. Wildcard YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO

    OPTIONAL FUN
Lots of murdergames have in-universe public profiles for other characters to get the skinny on yours. If you'd like to fill one out to post with your toplevel, peep at the code below!

You don't strike me as a very happy person.

[Now, maybe this is him projecting. Michael's come to realize that maybe he does that a lot. He's working on it, sort of, it's on the list. But if Eleanor could see how Michael lashed out at others because he was...scared, insecure, any of those things that he's only just beginning to admit...then is Michael wrong when he sees that in others?

Maybe, maybe not. He's a very recent student of empathy.

Standing here just staring Ebenezer down is starting to feel weird. Michael turns to find the kettle and starts filling it with water. It's an electric one; he wonders if Ebenezer might have gone for some tea if he weren't so very apparently incapable of using technology? Well, doesn't matter, this is mostly just something to do with his hands.]

Alright. Here's the thing. I was with you for a long time on these profiles being made up. But now I'm starting to think they aren't.

[He's never made mention of this before. Everything fake about his profile (Likes: his friends, humans) had seemed like the perfect cover story, so he just went with it. But now...]

We all know we've forgotten things, right? Why couldn't it be something massive?
mrhumbug: (Default)

[personal profile] mrhumbug 2021-12-28 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because my life is my own, MY OWN. My choices, my loss, my pain, happy or not.

[There's definitely hints of lashing out here, to say the least; Ebenezer's previous outbursts have had a sort of chilliness to them, even when laying into the Overseers about the latest motive or being kidnapped, it had felt more like intense annoyance rather than real anger.]

[Now, though, there's an edge in his voice, a wetness at his eyes.]

Not something to be toyed with, by- by Overseers or angels or dreams or ghosts and spirits, as some sort of threat or- as if I'm some kind of child to be lectured and educated on my own experiences. If I've loved and lost then happy or not that is MY life, sir, and I will not have it taken from me so easily.
eudaimonikos: (moral exactitude)

[personal profile] eudaimonikos 2021-12-28 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Michael looks up in surprise at the outburst. Maybe he's not particularly empathetic, but of course he trained himself to read human moods long ago. That's important, for emotional tortures. And ah, he hasn't really seen Ebenezer like this. He's actually upset! Last week that would've delighted him, but now he just feels sort of weird and bad about it. At least he already knows the answer to this one - he needs to be nice. Say something comforting, go on. He can do it, probably.

Can he do it without playing a part, though? He searches for words for a moment. When he does speak, his tone is...well, it's not Angel Michael's overweening sympathy. He's trying to be genuine here, and he's just not actually that nice. He's trying, though.]

It already has been. All of us, all of our lives. I don't really get what you're dealing with back home - [clearly, the weird comments Ebenezer occasionally makes about it make no sense] - but here and now, we're all in the same boat.

[He's trying to connect it back to himself, to his own experiences. Right now, it's really the only way he knows how to sympathize. It's true, though - just think, if he'd gone ahead and killed someone last week. It wouldn't have just been a betrayal of everyone here, it would have been a betrayal of his friends. A betrayal of himself, or at least the self he's trying to create. The self that maybe he already became.

Michael puts the pot on to boil and turns to lean back against the counter, arms folded and jaw set. Definitely not even looking at Ebenezer; he's not so far along in his character arc that he can speak about his own feelings so easily.]

I remembered some important things last night. Things that have made me...realize...that I'm not exactly the person I thought I was, yesterday. And I think...I might not be the person I am right now anymore, either. [Head Architect of the Good Place, it said, like he isn't what he is.] I don't know where this is going to end up anymore. I hate that they could just take that away from me...

[This is going a little farther than he intended. Michael frowns hard at the wall.]

...I'm not trying to teach you anything. I'm not qualified. I was only doing that because I knew it bothered you, and I don't want to act that way anymore. [His frown deepens, but he knows what he should say:] I'm sorry.

Name: Ao Hoshizaki| Champion Lost Girl | Cyclical
Age: 15 | Species: Human| Occupation: Student, magical girl
Likes: Anime, YA novels
Dislikes: Studying, boring stuff
Traits: Goofy, flirty, empathetic
Trivia: Ao used to call herself Moon Shadow in middle school.

[Ao is a self-proclaimed isekai protagonist. She doesn't know why she became a magical girl (or maybe she does, it's hard to get an answer out of her). She just sees this affair to be a vacation from a vacation. At least until the bodies start dropping. Even then, Ao prefers to keep moral up.

Parties? Sure! Stupid activities? Definitely! It doesn't matter if you're a thousand year vampire or a fellow teenager, Ao is going to help you keep your spirits up! If you happen to be a fellow teenage girl she might flirt a little on the way, too. We're all friends here, it's fine!

The murders do bother h er a lot but they have to keep moving on. If they don't... well, she won't let that happen! She might not be the leader here but she's going to make sure that everyone comes out alright. That's the job of a protagonist, right?]

My...conscience?

[Michael turns to blink incredulously at Ebenezer for a moment. He knows what a conscience is, of course; he's not an idiot. But it's really more an academic knowledge.]

No. No? Nooooo. [But he apologized even though his friends weren't here to see it? Just because he knew that he ought to?] You can't just...grow one of those, right? No, that's a human thing. I'm just trying to have a conversation here, man, don't make it weird.

Look, I've had a really weird few months! [Michael whines, in an extremely un-Angel Michael way.] All compressed into one really weird night! It's not like you aren't having freaky flashbacks, too, you say the weirdest shit.

[But he's not far enough along in his journey, and also does not particularly care about Ebenezer enough, to really ask about that! If he doesn't wanna talk about it, no skin off Michael's face.

(That's the demon saying. Because of. You know.)]

I don't have a conscience. Come on, you know I'm not really an angel. I'm a demon, I just said that to screw with people.

Yeah, I'm gonna start telling folks today. Trying this new thing where I don't lie to everyone all the time. I was getting sick of that whole "oooooh, I'm so sweet and nice!" thing anyway.

To...relax?

[Okay, all right, maybe that wasn't exactly obvious. He could have phrased that better. He opens up one of the packs of colored pencils, rummaging around until he finds a nice emerald green.]

I understand the idea of keeping busy. It's the sort of thing you did back home, because everything needed done. That's not the case here. You can still be doing something without it being work. For fun. There's a lot of down time here, free time. There aren't animals to feed, kids to fuss over, ['kids' being a relative term here] crops to pick or plant, soil to till, wood to chop.

[The page he turns to has some pleasing repeating circular shapes, and he starts filling in some of the parts in green.] You don't need to give yourself a job just because you're used to it. Not if you don't want to.

Name: Mobius M. Mobius | Champion of the Sacred Timeline | Timestamped | Your Dad, Wow! | Super TVA Level Analyst
Age: ██ | Species: Human | Occupation: Time Agent
Likes: Jet skis, Josta, mischievous scamps, peace at the end of time
Dislikes: Betrayal, the unrepentant, cutting back on caffeine, jumpscares
Traits: Insubordinate, stubborn, unpredictable, petty
Trivia: Mobius only apprehends the most dangerous variants on the timeline. That probably does not include any of yours.

[Mobius does not initially seem like his traits at all, aside from maybe stubborn. Mostly he seems like a folksy dopey tired pencil pusher federal agent type, overly casual, overly curious, but fairly boring. Right up until the point when the first motive happens. Then he does a lot of pushing it with the rules to see how far he can bend them, and tries to have verbal sparring matches with the overseer(s) every time they show up. It's pretty entertaining to watch, actually, and definitely lives up to petty.

He tends to be the voice of reason to people, endearingly encouraging, willing to call people out on their absolute bullshit, and has an uncanny ability to cold read people to a certain extent. It's nothing supernatural, he's just observant. While he doesn't set out to play therapist, conversations with him do tend to turn...in that kind of direction, for better or worse. Very nearly no one is a lost cause to him. Maybe reading into demeanor and tics over the span of a couple of weeks will help him to reveal a killer?

Good to have around investigations. Pretty good to have around afterparties. Not here for anyone moralizing, though. Takes him a while to acclimate to time moving in a constant state of forward. Gravitates toward particularly troubled people. Is not actually your dad (wow), but still probably the most conveniently dad-shaped person in the round.]

Dislikes: Being left alone
Traits: Loyal, lighthearted, lovey-dovey.
Trivia: Lambda's favourite genre of music is electro pop.

[ A few weeks into their time aboard the Fantasy Sweet, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Lambda has completely forgotten they're in the middle of a death game. She'd been all in on the whole premise of everyone dating everyone – they didn't call her the Champion Love Freak for nothing, it seems – and her enthusiasm hasn't been at all dampened by the turn things have taken towards deadly. It's not that she doesn't understand what's going on, but she seems completely unmoved by it all. In some ways, it's a positive more than a negative – they need someone to keep morale up and she's got smiles and affection and overflowing compassion for everyone, cuddly and touchy-feely with everyone who'll allow her to be. But as the weeks go on, her airy detachment has started its share of arguments and no matter how often it happens, she seems unable or unwilling to understand that the problem is her.

So it's perhaps a surprise to find her on Sunday not in the karaoke bar, as is her usual haunt, but in the garden, sitting and staring at the memorial garden that's been steadily growing during their time here. She's shown little to no interest in it before but now she's staring at it with flat, tired eyes that seem out of place and strange on her.

Something is definitely strange. ]

[Let's put aside whatever moral quandaries might arise from putting an AI on a dating-murder game. (shawna said laughing hysterically) The fact that anyone in the universe decided Mobius should be on a dating game show type production would be laughable to him, and then the bodies started dropping, and then he realized his purpose here.

Because he needs a purpose. And that's to keep everyone safe, or as safe as he can. And to solve the mysteries as they emerge. Sometimes that is the way to keep people safe. Solve a murder to keep the rest of them alive. It's exhausting in a way his job had rarely been, simply because of the terrible social aspect of it. These people, they're not just numbers, not just wayward variants (well, they might be, but not under his jurisdiction at any rate), but people he has to live with.

(And date? Is the dating thing still on the table? Yeah, because all this just screams roses and candlelit dinners.)

Lambda, bless her digital soul, has grated on just about everyone's nerves, leading to plenty of arguments left uncomfortably unfinished for her refusal to take any blame. It might simply be her programming, but to program a love-obsessed virtuadoll to be so fucking obstinate sure was a choice if so. Mobius gets along with her well enough, if only to help keep any fights from happening before they begin.

And Sundays just plain suck. When memories leech back in through dreams, it's always chaotic, a tumult of emotions, and one really has to wonder if perhaps some of the least stable people in seven galaxies were chosen specifically for this. (Hey, it might lead to more murder, apparently!) He does his rounds and finds the karaoke bar...strangely barren. The garden is, in fact, one of the last places he looks, because it's completely out of her norm.

He watches her for a little bit, as though he might divine out of the air what's going on, before he finally strolls up and takes a seat on the grass next to her.]

Age: 23 | Species: Minotaur | Occupation: Mercenary, farmhand
Likes: Woodworking, family, his friends, critters
Dislikes: Fighting, when friends argue, thinking too hard
Traits: Gregarious, friendly, gentle
Trivia: Astreas often goes by his childhood nickname 'Peaches'.

['Peaches' was raised since he was young with the large halfling Thorncreek family. For that reason Peaches is a person who knows how intimidating he is. He acts a bit oblivious but he realizes that not everyone is used to seeing a minotaur. He won't be upset if people, especially the more serious kind, refer to him by his given name but he figures that people are more at ease with someone who calls themself a somewhat silly name. Especially in tense situations like this.

He won't lie if asked that this situation makes him incredibly nervous. Peaches is more at home fighting off wildlife or scaring bandits. That's why he tries to be the one to take care of everyone. Hurt yourself while investigating? Peaches is there with a handkerchief to put on your cut or willing to carry you to the infirmary. He's practically the life of the afterparties, too.

Though, when the arguing gets intense? He'll likely try to calm everyone down... by shouting. He doesn't do well with people he likes arguing and if he talks to you? You're a friend. A stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet, that's the Thorncreek way!

Of course that means either he makes it to the end or dies tragically. You know, the usual for a friendly giant in a murder game.]

But if someone actually makes the effort to bother her into proper friendship, there's so much to love! Like how demanding she can be! And how she gets slightly less mean to you! But she's also like, a teenager. She's very smart, and very intuitive, and clearly somewhat more upset by this whole situation than she's willing to let on, especially at vulnerable moments like afterparties and body discoveries.

[ Her silence and lack of response when he takes a seat is troubling. Bubbly and friendly as she is with everyone, Lambda's got her particular favourite people like everyone else does and she tends to perk up like an excitable puppy when she spots any of them. Mobius has earned himself a spot on the Lambda's Favourite People list purely by being one of the increasingly rare people on the station to have not gotten into a fight with her at some point but all she does is glance at him before going back to staring at the memorials.

He usually has a good idea of what to say. Even when he doesn't have all the answers, or when Lambda's boiling over with frustration at the others, he's usually good at helping her to understand where they might be coming from.

So... maybe it's worth asking him what's on her mind.

After a long while of still silence, Lambda shifts a little bit where she's sat. ]

[It's not the kind of question he was expecting, and for as Weird And Troubling as her disposition has been this whole time, it's that that really takes him aback. And it's a loaded question, too. Because there are gods (and monsters who would call themselves gods) and spirits and souls and dimensions and realms beyond understanding. And every culture of every species in the universe has their own ideas about death, and what lies beyond death.

And he doesn't know.

Well, in some regards, that's not wholly true. The question as she asks it is if humans, with all their tests and experiments and deductive reasoning, ever come up with a definitive answer in their long and storied existence. That, as far as he's aware, he can answer. But it's also not the question she's actually asking, he thinks.]

There've been cases, all throughout human history, of people on the brink of death, or people who have in a strictly medical sense died but been brought back, who claim to have seen something or been aware of something beyond death. Whole religions have formed asking the question of what happens to the human consciousness after the body dies.

[That isn't an answer to the question that she asked nor the question she didn't ask. Deliberately. It's not like Lambda the love-crazy doll to ponder death and what comes after it. In fact, it's the polar opposite, and a reason (among many) that she's gotten into such vehement fights with others, for a regarded callousness, a fixation on those still alive and being alive and living that to the fullest and if they die well at least they had a good time first.]
