[ there are a lot of things that make Camellia strange. her situation, which she's bizarrely open about, is almost the complete opposite of Rudbeckia's: a fictional character who left the story that created her and has entered the real world here. it makes Ruby a little envious, actually. it seems like it was so easy for Camellia to do something that Ruby has to fight tooth and nail for, every day of her life. if only she could have changed her narrative fate that easily, she wouldn't have had to endure even half of what she did.

another of her oddities is that she's so... easy. Ruby barely even has to make an effort to suck up to Camellia. within a week of their arrival here in this old, run-down ghost town, Camellia was already checking in on people, bringing them food, offering a shoulder to cry on. it's not what Ruby is used to. she's never been around anyone who was this uncomplicated — at least, in terms of securing their favour. she's not even sure if she should trust kindness that comes so effortlessly. would Camellia throw her under the bus as soon as it became necessary? if so, then Ruby needs to make herself matter more than just another poor captive to be pitied.

the motive they've been given has shaken a lot of people up: get away with murder, and get someone you love back. from the dead, from far away, even from emotional distance... there are probably a lot of people who would kill for that. people here who have lost friends, or siblings, or lovers.

Ruby doesn't have anyone like that. but she's still here crying on Camellia's doorstep. ]

Camellia... I'm really sorry to disturb you, I just—

[ she hiccups, and then sniffles pitifully, for good measure. ]
