The Murder Game Meme



You know the script. You wake up in a place you've never seen before, with a whole bunch of complete strangers and there's a mysterious voice or a mascot or what have you ready to let you know how things are going to work around here.

The rules are simple: You're trapped here, with no hope of release or rescue. You've been provided with all the basic necessities you need to live comfortably, and all you have to do is settle down and live out the rest of your days here in peace. But if you can't do that -- if you're really so desperate to escape that you'll do anything -- then there's one teeny tiny thing you have to do first.

All you have to do is kill somebody.

But it's not quite that simple. Every death will be followed by a period of investigation, followed by a trial in which the survivors will attempt to solve the mystery and out the culprit. If the survivors guess correctly and out the culprit, the killer is executed and life goes on. But if the survivors guess wrong, then the culprit is free as a bird and everyone else is executed.

Even with the promise of freedom, can you really bring yourself to kill so many other people?

1. High School A classic! Doesn't matter if you're too old or too young to be in high school -- you've been enrolled and the only way for you to graduate is to kill a fellow student. But hey, the faculties are nice!
2. Tropical Island Weren't you just hankering for a nice tropical vacation? No? Too bad! You're going to have a nice sunny vacation at the beach and if you don't like it, just kill someone and go home. Simple!
3. Prison It doesn't matter if you don't remember committing any crime; you've been tried and found guilty of something or other and now you can go ahead and rot away in jail. If you ever want to see the sunlight again, better put that criminal mind to good use and get rid of your inmates.
4. Wildcard! None of the above scratch your murder itch? Go wild and come up with your own setting!

1. Excuse Me, Who Are You? You've just woken up in this weird place and you have no idea what's going on. But hey -- maybe this stranger's more informed than you. Or maybe you can put your heads together and investigate what's going on.

4. Trial You know how this one goes. Line up all your evidence and sniff out the killer -- or sit there and sweat and hope no one works out you're the murderer. Will they go down with a confession or put up a fight?
5. Afterparty You've survived another trial, but more of your friends have died. Even without the executions, trials are a stressful enough affair. It's time to destress and lick your wounds and support each other.

[ It’s four weeks into the game when they finally lose their “leader” – a tall, buff, rough-and-tumble, heart-of-gold kind of guy who’d make hope speeches at the drop of a hat and was determined to see everyone make it out alive. If he’d been the dad of this broken little murder family then Sing Love had absolutely been the mom.

She was level-headed and calm in every circumstance to the point where it almost seemed eerie. Even in the face of death, executions and losing people she cared about there was never a moment she didn’t seem collected and at ease. Maybe it was a front – a way of coping. She seemed fond enough of her fellow ‘classmates’ after all, so she couldn’t be completely heartless. Not someone who was willing to sit with her grief-stricken friends and offer comfort, right?

But under all the smiles and reassurances, there’s something about her that’s a little... strange.

The name, for one. When pressed, she’d laughed it off as a silly stage name and then hush-hushed anyone who asked what her real name was. Trade secret, she had insisted. Not to be shared with the public.

Then there’s the fact that she doesn’t eat. Or doesn’t seem to, anyway. She’s sipped endless cups of tea but no one around the school has ever seen so much as a crust of bread pass her lips. But that can’t be possible four weeks into the game, can it?

Week four, the students are offered another of those motives. Kill and escape and I’ll help you fix your worlds from whatever tragedy has turned them upside down. Sing Love seems unconcerned. She’s even calm on the outside when they find the body that week. Or rather, what’s left of the body. There’s a horrorshow of blood and chaos in the tearoom that week, gore painting the floor near the overturned table and chairs and teacups – two of them, enough for two guests – smashed to pieces against the wall. There was a gruesome fight here and despite the chaos it doesn’t look as though there’s a body left to find.

But then someone spots a finger. Just a finger, laying in the midst of all the blood and shattered pottery. And that’s apparently enough to get the body discovery announcement going. ]

Well then. Should we start looking over the evidence?

Kurumi was panicking. This... this wasn't good at all. Her first instinct was to hide it. Not say anything to Rii-san at all but that wouldn't work. She'd be the first to notice the change of her behavior.

Instead, Yuuri is going to have someone rattle her door and hear a hushed whisper.]

[ As morbid as it is, this has become something of a weekend tradition for them; after the first execution, a horrendously grisly and downright cruel display, it would have been easy for them all to retreat into their rooms and scream into their pillows, or at least get a good cry out. Mari, of course, had other plans; call it tactless, or insensitive, to celebrate in the wake of two deaths, but if they were going to grieve, at the very least, they should grieve together. The food was awful and there wasn't any music to be found, but the idea was actually more well-received than she had anticipated (the fact that she's so damn pushy probably helped matters), and the general consensus was that it might be nice to do it again, sometime.

What they hadn't anticipated, of course, was that their circumstances would practically necessitate making something like this a weekly ordeal. The parties get bigger as the group gets smaller; more people help with the food, some chip in with the decorations. Hell, some even have themes, spur-of-the-moment ridiculous ideas that cause the other "competitors" to look at the invitation in bafflement. Overall, though, they're fun times, just a little something to keep everyone's minds on more positive things than the atrocities they saw in that trial room.

Sometimes it worked. Sometimes, not so much. And in particular, Mari can see the way this whole thing is taking its toll on Dia, week after week. It must be their fifth or sixth one when she notices Dia's barely left the kitchen, having taken to washing the dishes in silence and cleaning up after everyone's mess.

That's...well, that's just like Dia, isn't it. ]

[ To anyone else, it may be surprisingly serious, considering how jovial she normally is. But even Mari has a side like this, one that she really only lets Dia see here, and she's quite determined to keep it that way.

[So...that trial. That certainly had been something. They all had just gotten there, and the whole nature of all of this had been dramatically revealed, along with a 'motive' that some people very obviously took without thinking about it. The power to change something in your past...while there was one major event Ichigo could think of that he'd want to change, he knew his mother wouldn't want him to kill someone just to save her.

But...it was too tempting for the culprit, and now both the culprit and the victim were dead. The execution had been disturbing, but Ichigo felt compelled to see it through to the end - especially since he couldn't see the ghost that the victim should be right now, which was both alarming and said volumes about what kind of place this is - and now they were having a weird 'we won but two people are dead' party where no one actually wants to celebrate, Ichigo included.

But Ichigo's title - Protective - is well deserved, as he's spending most of his time in the party checking up on everyone and making sure they're alright. Which ultimately brings him over to Kirito, that ever-present scowl still on his face, but much softer than normal.]

[ A tall and honestly kind of ripped young woman with bright red hair and eyes who talks like she's just stepped out of a fantasy novel. She's a bit distant and sort of professional but as soon as it comes out that there's murder involved all that disappears in a wave of fiery shonen fury. Once the cool and distant wall comes done, you'll find that she's crass, short-tempered, passionate and fucking determined to get as many people out of here safe as she possibly can.

Her profile will list her as Euphonious or Champion of Adryae. It will list her age as twenty-five, her profession as Knight of the Royal Guard and her species as Human/Siren which will prompt a great deal of confused squinting at her profile once she gets hold of it.

She's also a temporal fish out of water from a Ye Olde Fantasy Europe that has yet to work out indoor plumbing or electricity. Please someone educate her. ]

[Even murdergame memes need the occasional oddball, right? This is Sheldon Plankton of Spongebob Squarepants, an organism no taller than your pinky who's voice manages to travel surprisingly far. By the end of Week 2, he gets a little flying machine to help him move around a little.

His title is Schemer and it comes across that way. He's definitely affably evil, and makes no attempts at hiding it. He might be a little hard-edged at first, but he comes across as an asset if you manage to social-link him enough.]

She's a loud shounen and she's awfully spacey, often coming across as a naive ditz, but she's surprisingly perceptive and very, very sweet, going out of her way to befriend everybody and making sure everyone's as comfortable as she can make them. She knows when it's important to take things seriously, and she had a pretty intense sobbing breakdown over the first death because corpses are a new and exciting and horrible concept to her, but that aside, she's consistently upbeat and friendly, always staying in a good mood to keep everyone else in one, too! There's a sort of intense, optimistic determination about her, and she's never thought of anyone as truly evil or responsible for their cruel actions (i.e. murder, doing murdering) here. She wants to be your friend.]
