What's 'Halloween'?

[ You can usually count on a weird conversation happening when Kokoro starts asking questions. ]

Oh um... it's a holiday. Something that people do every year... like Valentine's and New Year's? It's more popular in America than Japan, so I don't know a lot about how it started...

It's basically a time for people to dress up and eat candy and have parties. The stores in the city usually decorate and sometimes there's parades, too.

Was there someone talking about it?

Yeah, but they said it was about monsters and scaring people, not candy and parties. Are you sure you're thinking of the same holiday?

Oh... well, like I said, it's more popular in America than it is where I'm from. So maybe it's more to do with that in America.

It hasn't been going on that long in Japan, but I know America's been doing it for a long time. So maybe that's what they were talking about?

For the same holiday to have such different meanings in different places... America must be a really scary place.

M--maybe... I've never been there, but I do wonder what's fun about a holiday where all you do is scare people...

[ this coming from a girl who loves horror games and horror movies. well at least with those you're sitting down with the agreement that you're going to have the crap scared out of you rather than just having a random stranger do it ]

I think they have lots of candy, too, though... trick or treat or something like that.

So, each time you meet a person, you don't know if they'll give you a trick or a treat?

I... think so...? Something like that. It might just be the children, though...

I know they all collect candy on Halloween so maybe it's something like, if you don't give people candy, they'll trick you?

It sounds like a thrilling and exciting holiday. Between the parties and the candy and the tricks, I don't know how someone could ever get bored.

It sounds really nerve-wracking to me, to be honest... Halloween in Tokyo is bad enough. Everyone gets kind of rude and rowdy and the streets end up covered in litter and costumes once everyone's done partying...

It'd be even worse if I had to be on edge the whole time, in case someone was planning on tricking me.

It shouldn't be a problem, as long as you take the initiative and trick them first.

Eh? Y--you think so?

Th--that sounds a little... I'm not really sure if I could do that.

You could use an easy trick. Like, when you're behind them, surprise them with a chop to the head!

[ kokoro honey remind her to sit you down one day and teach you about a little thing called assault ]

I--I think that's less like a trick and more asking to start a fight...

[ which she would reaaaally love to avoid doing on a day like halloween when everyone's already keyed up enough as it is ]

But an easy trick doesn't sound too bad...

An easy trick that won't start a fight... maybe you could sneak up and suddenly shout something instead.

I guess it's worth a try... I think I'd have to do it to my friends first, though. A stranger might not find it as funny as someone I actually know...
