[ This isn't how it's supposed to go. He should be worrying over her, not the other way around. Just had to go and get himself hurt, huh.

Still, if someone's going to be taking care of him, may as well be a cute girl. ]

I'm fine. [ He clearly isn't fine, but also doesn't want to take off his armor if he can avoid it. ] It's just a scratch.

[ Sophie is not a particularly intimidating girl. In fact, she is probably the Least Intimidating Person To Ever Exist. But when she thins her lips like that, sets her shoulders and glowers at him in a way that makes it very clear she's not taking no for an answer – well, let's say she does a pretty good impression of it at least. ]

A scratch from a monster. There could be any kind of dirt or poison on their claws – and even if there wasn't, it could get infected or you could pull it and hurt yourself even more. At the very least it has to be cleaned up!

[ Yeah, Pierce knows when he can't win an argument. There's no way around this, is there? ]

...How good are you with keeping secrets?

[ The hard line of her lips softens just a touch – not quite a smile, but certainly gentler than her glare from a moment ago. ]

If it's important enough to you to keep it a secret, then it'll never leave this cave.

[ And coming from Sophie of all people... it's probably believable. ]

[ Pierce looks hard at Sophie for a moment, trying to get a feel for her character. In the end, he gets the feeling that she's good for it. Pierce takes his helmet off, revealing... probably not the kind of face Sophie was expecting.

From there, he gets to work on the rest of his armor. Getting into and out of this stuff takes a minute. ]

Not a word of this to anyone. Got it?

... Oh.

[ Oh.

So– that's the secret.

Sophie doesn't hide her initial surprise – it would feel almost like a lie to do it and if Pierce is going to reveal such a closely guarded secret, then the least Sophie can do is be honest with him too. But then the moment of surprise passes, and Sophie just smiles and dips her head in a little nod. ]

Not a word. I promise.

Good.

[ As the armor comes off, the damage is... well, it's probably not life-threatening, but it's definitely a bigger deal than he was making it out to be. Blood runs freely down his back from a pretty nasty gash up near his shoulder. ]

...It's probably not as bad as it looks.

[ Not as bad as it looks. Sophie really doesn't have the energy to give that the retort it really deserves.

Instead, she snaps almost immediately into business mode. All in the same fluid movement, Sophie sheds her jacket and reaches up to pull her hair back from her face and pin it up as best she can. It's a little too short for a ponytail, but she wants it out of the way. As she's doing all this, she says– ]

I'm going to have to clean it first... then I'll see if I have anything I can use to help with the healing and after that, I'll bandage that.

[ And then, belatedly: ] ... Um! I'm so sorry, I should have asked first – Mister Pierce, is it alright if I do that?

[ It's a little late for that when he's already out of the armor, dummy. ]

[ "Just 'Pierce' is fine", he almost says, except that the fact that she's still calling him 'mister' even after seeing his face is doing a lot to reassure him. ]

...Sure. Hang on.

[ Pierce turns away from Sophie, carefully extracts himself from his shirt, and does his best to not feel self-conscious about everything that's going on. Setting aside anything feminine about his appearance, he's at least got muscles for days under all that armor. ]

[ Without his shirt in the way, she can get a better look at the wound and while it's certainly a lot worse than she was hoping, it's definitely not as bad as she was fearing. It'll be simple to patch up, she thinks.

With a pretty hefty thump, she drops her bag on the floor and extracts a fairly sizable waterskin from it. It's heavy enough that she has to hold it against her shoulder to carry it over to him and supports it one handed as she uncorks it. ]

This water's going to be a little cold, okay? It shouldn't be freezing, but it might make you jump, just a little. Oh – and if anything hurts too bad, make sure to let me know. I'll stop right away.

[ And with that said, she tips the lip of the waterskin forward and pours a slow, steady stream of cool water just across from the wound, hopefully just enough to take the worst of the blood with it. ]

[ Pierce grits his teeth and flinches at the touch of the water. Does it hurt? Yeah, it does, but he's not about to give the wound the satisfaction of knowing it. ]

...What do you need that's out this far in the ass-end of nowhere, anyway?

Oh, all sorts of things!

[ Despite the entire... well, everything about this situation, the opportunity to talk about alchemy is enough to make Sophie's tone lighten a little. ]

The soil in this region's really unique, so there's plants and herbs here that won't grow anywhere else. Right now, I'm out here for oastold leaves and red bull lace. If you make a salve out of them, they do a really amazing job at bringing down fevers. Oh! And the soil itself is really useful, too. When it's broken down, the minerals in it can be made into a really durable clay.

[ Satisfied that the water's done about as good a job as it's going to, Sophie pops the cork back into the waterskin and carefully sets it down. She feels around in her bag again before pulling out a carefully wrapped glass bottle. ]

Okay... just to make sure it's really clean, I'm going to wipe it down with rosnebore serum. I'm really sorry, but it's going to sting a lot – will you be alright?

Sure I will. It's my fault I got hurt, so i'm not gonna complain about what it takes to get patched back up.

[ Pierce's life philosophy is that if you act tough for long enough, you'll wind up getting tougher for real. ]

Okay, then. But don't say I didn't warn you!

[ And true to her word, when she starts wiping the wound down, it really stings. It, uh, also kind of stinks? It's a weird sort of grassy ammonia smell with some stagnant water stench mixed in for good measure. It's gross, is what I'm saying. ]

... you shouldn't say things like that, though. Really, if it's anyone's fault you got hurt, it's mine.

[ Clench those teeth, endure it. Why does medicine always have to be so painful? When is alchemy just gonna invent a healing salve that doesn't feel like being set on fire? ]

Fuck, you weren't kidding.

[ The stench almost distracts from the pain, in an unpleasant way. ]

...Don't go blaming yourself. I knew the danger, I accepted the job, I've had worse. If I didn't think I could handle it, I wouldn't have taken it.

Well... if that's the case, why don't we just agree that neither of us is to blame? You don't want me to blame myself and I definitely wouldn't want you to blame yourself. So wouldn't that be easier?

[ She corks the bottle and thankfully that horrible smell mostly subsides. With a careful touch, she then presses a cool cloth against the wound and holds it there. ]

Knowing how much worse it would've been without you, it just makes me even more glad that you decided to accept this job.

Really, if anyone's to blame, it's the monsters, and they're already dead.

[ With the cloth in place, the pain is already starting to subside. Alchemy is amazing, if you think about it. ]

It's a good thing you're an alchemist. If it was just me out here, I'd be in pretty sorry shape by the time I made it back to town.

By the sounds of it, we make a pretty good team. Wouldn't you say?

[ It's accompanied by a giggle, but it's pretty clear by the tone of her voice that she's sincere enough about it. ]

I'm sorry I can't do much more than clean it up, though. I know enough about medicine to get by, but treating wounds is a little bit out of my wheelhouse...

Just has to keep it from getting any worse before we're back in civilization. You're good at this stuff.

[ The secret of this conversation is the amount of energy Pierce has to dedicate to not thinking about how a cute stranger's hands are all over his back. It's strictly professional. You can do this without making it weird, Pierce. ]

...We might want to set up camp here for a while. Monster activity should die down by sunrise.

[ At least she's pretty professional about it! Which is kind of a surprise, since you would normally not really put 'Sophie' and 'professional' in the same sentence together. ]

That's fine with me. I should have enough supplies to keep us going – eheh, and I guess this way I won't be worried about your injuries.

[ As she's talking, she slowly peels the now sodden cloth away from his shoulder. The skin's probably a little tender still, but the majority of the pain should be gone. ]

Okay! Your wound's nice and clean now. You're not allergic to any herbs, are you? I have one or two I can lay on top of the wound under the bandage to help it heal a little quicker, if you'd like me to try it.

Not that I know of. Go for it, and stop if you see me break out into hives or anything.

Oh, don't say that. Having you get sick is the last thing we need right now...

[ But she goes ahead with the herbs anyway – thin, sticky leaves from a plant back in less dangerous turf that helped knit the skin back together when laid over the wound. They'd have to be changed out with the bandages, but it wasn't that much more work in the end. ]

Right... that should just about do it. How are you feeling? If there's nothing else hurting, I can go ahead and bandage this up.

Just fine. [ Relatively. ] Whatever you put on there, it sure did the trick.

It's amazing what you can do with the right ingredients, huh? I wish I could teach everyone how useful all the stuff around them could be, if they just knew where to look.

[ Okay, the wound's all cleaned and now would be the time to start bandaging... but, well. She was doing her best to make this not weird for poor Pierce but Sophie can't pretend this isn't at least A Little Weird. ]

Um... I'm going to bandage your shoulder now and I'll have to pass the bandage around the front and across your chest. Will that be okay?

[ This is maybe a little more double and triple-checking than she usually does when she has to treat someone's injuries, but this is an uncomfortable enough situation and the last thing she wants to do is make things more uncomfortable. ]

[Right. This part. Pierce tries grimly to suppress the blush he feels coming on, but it's not much use.]

F... Fine, do what you have to. Just don't go staring at anything you don't need to, got it?
