It is something I have always been prepared for. I was once replaced with an inferior line of mecha sonic units, before the Doctor decided to reactivate me on what was likely nothing more than a whim. Were it not for that, I would not be here today.

Of course it would. I will not prove myself the true Sonic even if I die along with him. I must outlast him, even if it is only a matter of moments.

I simply need to figure out why I cannot defeat him despite my superior performance.

Superior performance isn't necessarily everything.
It could be that he has a trick up his sleeve that you don't know about.
Or maybe you need to come up with some strategy that he wouldn't expect from you.

I have been destroyed by Sonic countless times. I would not say I have ever held back against him.

But this time felt particularly..."all out".

I feel at a loss having been defeated this time. I thought my victory was guaranteed.

Could that be the problem?
If you were so certain that you were going to win.
A lot of times, if a person's convinced they have no way of losing, it tends to trip them up and they can make mistakes they might not otherwise.

It's to do with how you fight.
Sometimes in poker, a player can end up losing even when the hand they have is objectively stronger than their opponent's.
Depending on how their opponent played, or what kind of strategy they used.
Overall raw strength can sometimes be a disadvantage, depending on how your opponent plays.
