The Murder Game Meme



You know the script. You wake up in a place you've never seen before, with a whole bunch of complete strangers and there's a mysterious voice or a mascot or what have you ready to let you know how things are going to work around here.

The rules are simple: You're trapped here, with no hope of release or rescue. You've been provided with all the basic necessities you need to live comfortably, and all you have to do is settle down and live out the rest of your days here in peace. But if you can't do that -- if you're really so desperate to escape that you'll do anything -- then there's one teeny tiny thing you have to do first.

All you have to do is kill somebody.

But it's not quite that simple. Every death will be followed by a period of investigation, followed by a trial in which the survivors will attempt to solve the mystery and out the culprit. If the survivors guess correctly and out the culprit, the killer is executed and life goes on. But if the survivors guess wrong, then the culprit is free as a bird and everyone else is executed.

Even with the promise of freedom, can you really bring yourself to kill so many other people?

tl;dr: it's a murdergame meme. TIME TO HAVE A BIG OL' MURDERGAME BLAST.


Settings

1. High School A classic! Doesn't matter if you're too old or too young to be in high school -- you've been enrolled and the only way for you to graduate is to kill a fellow student. But hey, the faculties are nice!
2. Tropical Island Weren't you just hankering for a nice tropical vacation? No? Too bad! You're going to have a nice sunny vacation at the beach and if you don't like it, just kill someone and go home. Simple!
3. Prison It doesn't matter if you don't remember committing any crime; you've been tried and found guilty of something or other and now you can go ahead and rot away in jail. If you ever want to see the sunlight again, better put that criminal mind to good use and get rid of your inmates.
4. Mall A huge mall stuffed full of stores, places to eat and all the regular amenities like deadbolted doors and the threat of death. It's like Black Friday but even worse because you can't leave and all the rest of the shoppers might actually kill you for real this time.
5. City Holy shit, you've got the run of a whole city this time around! Maybe with all this room to keep out of each other's way, you'll be able to make sure no one starts killing people. But probably not.
6. Cruise Boat YOU'RE ON A BOAT, MOTHERFUCKER. The accommodation is all five star, even if there's no one around to act as wait staff. The only snag is that you still have this whole murder thing hanging over your head – but on the plus side, they have those little drinks with the umbrellas in, so...
7. Space Station THE FINAL FRONTIER... Maybe you're familiar with space stations like this or maybe all this future tech is fascinating to you. Not like it matters either way, of course, because you won't be getting out of here unless you lay down a murder on someone.

Downtime

1. Excuse Me, Who Are You? You've just woken up in this weird place and you have no idea what's going on. But hey -- maybe this stranger's more informed than you. Or maybe you can put your heads together and investigate what's going on.
2. Social Link Go! Well, if you're going to be stuck in here for however long, you might as well get to know the people stuck in here with you. You've got plenty of rooms to explore together and there's enough to do to keep you occupied. How do you plan on passing time without killing each other?
3. Vending Machine Woes Somewhere in this place there's a mysterious vending machine that spits out all manner of bizarre items and occasionally dispenses items that belong to you and the other people trapped here. You've got a fat stack of tokens and nothing to lose.
4. The Corners of My Mind So as it turns out, your lovely hosts have been fiddling with your memories. Maybe you're just discovering this now or maybe you've had a particularly upsetting memory regain you're dealing with.

Whatever is it, would you kill for it?
2. Murder WELL APPARENTLY, YES. Are you a killer or are you being killed? Either way, someone's not walking away from this alive.
3. Body Discovery Rise and shine, murdergame! It's a brand new day and someone's dead. Better get investigating!
4. Trial You know how this one goes. Line up all your evidence and sniff out the killer -- or sit there and sweat and hope no one works out you're the murderer. Will they go down with a confession or put up a fight?
5. Afterparty You've survived another trial, but more of your friends have died. Even without the executions, trials are a stressful enough affair. It's time to destress and lick your wounds and support each other.
6. Mastermind It's the end. It's time to uncover all the mysteries behind this murder game -- and find out just who trapped you here. Are they really an unconnected party, or is the mastermind someone among you...?

Aside from directly challenging our last emo royal for the title of Most Unnecessary Surnames, Iris immediately steps up the minute things get going and establishes herself as a sort of leader as best she can – arranging meetings, putting together schedules, setting up afterparties, etc. She's used to being in positions of authority, and she quickly proves herself to be a pretty capable leader – she's cool-headed, logical, a quick thinker and good at putting together murder clues, which is useful when you're in a murdergame. She initially comes off as a dreadfully cold and distant and pretty unsympathetic, but if the "became queen at fifteen fucking years old" part of her profile didn't tip you off on that, she's just extremely socially stunted and has little to no experience when it comes to interacting and communicating with people as peers. Given enough time and kindness and she'll start to defrost a little, enough to open up about her life back home. Two people in particular will come up now and then – her mother, who she lost at the age of twelve but still thinks of fondly, and her childhood friend and girlfriend, Lyrica.

Unfortunately, as time passes and memory regains pour in, Iris struggles more and more under the pressure they're all under and inevitably cracks. Whether this just means a mid-week meltdown or a full on multi-body pile up when a secret-telling, endangering important people or changing fate motive is offered is entirely up to you/RNG to decide. ]

[ The Undertaker has been keeping an eye on Ms. Harmonia here. She reminds him of someone he knows back home. A boy who became an earl and took on a dangerous role soon after he turned ten. He never went into too much detail (maybe some tidbits after a while, but nothing more) but he was always fond of the family as a whole.

Perhaps that's why today's motive has him shaken. Changing fate? As in meddling with future events, or changing the past as well? Either way, he's as tempted to take that offer as he is reluctant to paint a target on his back. He has to see this through to the end.

He needs a distraction, his "friend" here seems out of sorts as well. Best to go check on her before she dies too. She might notice him creeping up on her without a grin on his face, if she's observant enough. ]

The TL;DR: Briar is a self-aware fictional character from a world called Libretto that serves as a sanctuary for characters who have been abandoned by their authors and narratives. Once the hero of a turn-based JRPG, Briar decided she didn't particularly like fighting and hurting people and is now the apprentice Imaginieer who will one day be responsible for keeping Libretto alive and functioning. Scary stuff!!

Despite not really diggin' it when it comes to all the death and despair, Briar does her best to hold her own and be of help when the chips are down. During trials, she will be one of the first to start pushing for people to nail down timelines and potential motivations for any of the murders. Has probably at least once figured out who the murderer was purely by breaking down their motivations and matching it to someone at the trial.

Executions are needlessly...awful, and plenty of people are pretty bummed about the whole thing. To put it very mildly. [ First impressions here. Pay no attention to the profile, he's just a humble undertaker from the late Victorian Era... A good person to have on hand for corpse touching! However, he insists on fixing up the bodies with whatever tools he can scrounge around and resents how they keep vanishing after the trial and execution. Soon enough, there will be a memorial of some sort and you have this guy to blame.

But it's not all business for him. He finds some amusement from other people's antics in between the killings. In fact, he will withhold information in meetings until someone makes him laugh hard enough. Who can blame him for trying to keep sane in the face of such death?

... Something's still off about him. It becomes more apparent as the weeks drag on and the friends he's made are inevitably endangered. Perhaps he ends up killing someone to protect another, proving himself capable in combat despite everyone's powers being disabled. Or maybe he's too late, and he continues to keep his friend's corpse as preserved as possible until he can properly "take care of them." Or maybe... Maybe he's the one who becomes obsessed with deadland.

[While Light has no familiarity with space stations as such, at least the star-studded darkness outside, the expanse of nothingness and distant worlds, feels more like home to him than to many of the other prisoners. He finds the view out the window calming, and he--no less than any of them--could use some calm after the "little push" their captor gave them today.

Rewriting the events of the past... who wouldn't be tempted. Grim-faced, he sighs, then notices another's reflection in the unbreakable glass. He turns towards one of the young souls he finds both exasperating and painfully compelling, a precious patch of brightness to protect.]

While, on the surface, he's no more than a breezy 1980's playboy, Shu is intelligent, resourceful, and solid when it counts. He knows more about music and games than forensic investigation, but thinks on his feet, thriving under pressure. His friendly and less serious nature also makes him valuable for group morale. He tends more towards supporting others than being supported himself.

You can find Shu near vending machines, arcades or entertainment rooms, near tech you wouldn't see in 1985, and parties. He doesn't tend to throw them, but he'll always show up.]

When new areas open, he's up bright and early to draw detailed maps and search for what may be hidden, and downtime always finds him up for a chat. During investigations and trials, however, he's a sober, level-headed body toucher. While he's not the best at visualizing the order of events, the evidence he contributes is precise. [Coming in at under two feet tall (or perhaps reaching two and a half feet, counting his adorably fluffy ears), Light looks a lot more like a floating stuffed animal than some destined champion. Would you believe he was cursed at the critical moment by his archfoe, the Lord of Shadow? Either way, he's such a small, vulnerable target, putting him in this deathtrap seems absurdly cruel. Looks like all you'd have to do is grab him by the ears and dash his brains out against the wall to get out of here.

Despite his physical helplessness, Light shows a will of steel and a hero's heart. He talks and acts like a storybook knight, addressing himself to others with chivalry, answering any call to aid, and dispensing advice to youngsters with fighting spirit and stars in their eyes. One often hears his high-pitched anime mascot voice in deep conversation with grizzled veterans sharing war stories.

Light gravitates to more natural-seeming settings, if any should open up, as well as training facilities and communal dining. Solving murders isn't exactly in his wheelhouse, but he gets as stirred up about justice and saving lives as you'd expect from a career hero. And should someone look like they really need a hug, he might--might--allow them to hold his soft, fuzzy body for a little while. But not a word to anyone else, okay?]

[Hey cool this is fine. Mobius does not initially seem like his traits at all, aside from maybe stubborn. Mostly he seems like a folksy dopey tired pencil pusher federal agent type, overly casual, overly curious, but fairly boring. Right up until the point when the first motive happens. Then he does a lot of pushing it with the rules to see how far he can bend them, and tries to have verbal sparring matches with the overseer(s) every time they show up. It's pretty entertaining to watch, actually.

He doesn't actually try to adopt anyone, but hoo boy, he tends to be the voice of reason to people, endearingly encouraging, willing to call people out on their absolute bullshit, and has an uncanny ability to read people to a certain extent. It's nothing supernatural, he's just observant. While he doesn't set out to play therapist like his profile says, conversations with him do tend to turn...in that kind of direction, for better or worse. Very nearly no one is a lost cause to him. Maybe reading into demeanor and tics over the span of a couple of weeks will help him to reveal a killer. /SHRUG

Good to have around investigations. Pretty good to have around afterparties. Not here for anyone moralizing, though. Takes him a while to acclimate to time moving in a constant state of forward. Gravitates toward particularly troubled people. Is not your dad, but still probably the most conveniently dad-shaped person in the round.]

[ Mobius might have noticed some odd things about the Undertaker by now. For one, he seems to be hiding a lot of secrets. He won't tell people what he's found during meetings unless they make him laugh first, and even then he's strangely vague about who he is and what exactly he was doing before he got dragged here. The fact that everyone's powers were nerfed must have disturbed him, but he insists he's just a normal human...

And now another oddity came up during the first investigation.

Of course the Undertaker was the first to examine the body. He's been working with the dead for years, he's more than qualified to preform an autopsy of his own. Yet, the way he gets so close to the body and brushes his fingers over the wounds to notice tiny things ordinary people would have seen by now... The way he's mumbling to himself... ]

Poor thing. If only I still had the means to fix you up properly...
