[ Her throat feels like it's about to pinch closed. Of course he'd go and say something like that, something that makes it that much easier and harder for her to actually say what she came here to say. If he likes spending time with her, then that makes things easier, but if he's happy to be friends then–

... Then... [ Ryoko shifts a little where she's sat. She has to be looking at him, of course, to see his answer but she can't quite bring herself to see what face he's making so she drops her gaze to his hands instead. ] If I had a question to ask that might be a little out of the blue... do you think that would change? Or would things stay the same?

...?

[It would depend entirely on the question of course, but why would she ask that but not look directly at him? It makes answering kind of hard, she knows that...

Somehow it makes him worry just a bit.

Does she not want to be his friend anymore? He'd get it, like, he's sure he's no fun to be around compared to his brother and maybe the fact his face is buried in his phone half the time when they hang around. Maybe he's boring? He...

Right. Overthinking.

He pauses and doesn't answer, but since she's looking away from his face, well.

Her phone buzzes.]

[He'll listen. But he's sure nothing will change.]

[ It's sort of a relief to hear that – even if she knows that, with their positions reversed, she'd say the exact same thing without even thinking twice about what the question might be. The part of her brain that's been working itself overtime trying to psyche her out about this helpfully pipes up that he might change his mind once he actually hears the question, but–

No, he really isn't like that. If Morris says something, you can generally rely on him to mean it.

She looks up at him properly, trying to keep her face from showing how tight her stomach is squeezing right now. ]

You said the two of us are friends, but... if things were a little different, how would you feel about that?

[Again, it would depend on what exactly that meant.

But it is strange to him that she's beating around the bush somewhat. Ryoko is usually very forthright, especially with him.

Still...]

("My answer won't change. Whatever you have in mind, so long as we stay together...") [He pauses; not hesitation, but he's trying to word it just right.]

("Whatever you have in mind, don't hesitate. You can tell me anything.")

[And he reaches out just to hold her hand, encouragingly.]

[ Ah. She'd queued up some words on her tongue but it's a little harder to make them come out with his hand in hers. She stares down at their joined hands for a moment too long and then realizes as she does so that she could sit here in silence forever and never just say it. So she pulls in a breath and makes herself look him in the face. ]

I like you as more than a friend.

[ It sort of – tumbles matter of factly out of her mouth, like she's telling him what the weather forecast is. ]

If you'd rather us just stay friends, then that's fine with me. I'm happy for us to stay that way, too. But... [ Ah. Now she's hesitating. There's no way to pretend she isn't going a little red in the face with how much it stands out on her pasty skin. ] If it's fine with you, then I'd like for us to be together as more than friends.

[After all that. After all her planning, sorting through feelings, deliberation, hesitation and contemplation.....................]

("Yeah. Sure.")

[CAN IT REALLY BE THIS EASY.]

[ . . . Ryoko blinks at him. ]

Wait. You're agreeing, just like that?

[ after all the overthinking she put into this???????? ]

[Okay, now he blinks at her.]

("Did you want me to say no?")

[ It's just what? She's getting all thrown off and flustered in a way she really doesn't usually allow herself to be. ]

I just expected it to warrant some kind of discussion!

[He squeezes her hand once, smiles, then lets go so he can sign.]

("Okay. Let's discuss it."

"You like me. I like you."

"Ryoko, your thoughts on that?")

[He's just being a shit now.]

[ Oh my God, now she's the one getting bullied about this!!! ]

I– made that clear enough, I think! Unless you want me to somehow make it more plain than asking you to date me!

Oh, uh, she never put it into exactly those words, did she? ]

[Ah ha ha ha ha, this is so cute? He's never seen Ryoko like this, he could seriously get addicted to it.

He leans a little closer.]

("What if I said let's go on a date right now?")

[ She's NOT red in the face right now. Don't look at her!!! ]

I'd– believe it when it happened. You never ditch school for anything less than an actual emergency.

[ If he's going to make a challenge of this, so is she!! ]

[OH SHE THINKS SO!!!!!!!

He stands up from the bed calmly, turns to face her and holds out his hand, practically inviting her to let him take her up on that.

What's it gonna be?]

[ Ah, so this is a challenge. Ryoko stares him down just long enough to be certain that he isn't playing chicken with her before she reaches out and takes his hand. If they're going to do this, why not really commit to it? ]

Fine, then. Just so you know, this isn't what I'd planned at first when I got us out of class.

[ But she doesn't seem displeased in the least. ]

[And he holds that hand because why not? She thinks he'd never skip school unless it was an emergency, but it's not because he actually cares; he never really cared about much until a little while ago. Morris spends most of his time going through the motions.

But Ryoko? Ryoko is worth playing hooky for. He'd much rather do this than go back to class.

So he keeps a firm hold of her hand and leads her to the door of the nurse's office, but opens it carefully to peek outside...and they're clear. He briefly gives her a nod before quickly making his way outside, careful to keep a firm hold of her hand and pull her with him.

Just two (not exactly) kids on the run, hand in hand.]

[ She's never actual stolen out of the school while class was in session and while she doesn't imagine it's hard, this does suddenly feel very high stakes. And yet, Ryoko surprises herself with a laugh, muffled as it is behind her free hand to make sure she doesn't alert anyone in the other classes to their escape. ]

You don't think– we won't just be able to walk right out of the front door, will we? What'll our excuse be if we get caught?

[ Not that she actually cares either way if they do but somehow, making this seem more perilous than it actually is heightens the fun. You know, for the bit. ]

[If they get caught?

He looks back at her, quite serious about his answer despite his smile.]

("We run and don't look back.")

Well then, we'd better pick up the pace.

[ And out they go. She expects to be scruffed by the collar by a teacher ready to scold them for running in the halls every time they turn a corner or pass a door. But miraculously, it really does seem like they're going to make a clean break. If she'd known rulebreaking was as easy and straightforward as this, she might have gotten into it long ago. ]

And– more importantly, where are you planning on taking me? If this is a date, we can't just go anywhere.

[Even he knows that. He kind of did this impromptu, so he figured he'd just-]

"Hey Shinonome, Robotnik! What are you two doing outside?"

[His head snaps back to look at a teacher calling to them, having spotted them from an open window and starting to make their way outside to meet the pair.

Thinking about a mile a minute, he suddenly drags her in a different direction than that of the school gate...to the bike shed, where he can pull his out, guide her to sit at the back (even if she protests he may just force her onto it whoops) and then hops onto the seat.

Only now does he turn to her in order to say-]

("Hold on to me.")

[AND THEY'RE OFF.

The teacher is dead ahead but he whizzes past them, skids to a sudden stop behind them and then suddenly takes off through the gate to make their daring escape. They're now cycling FREE until their parents probably find out later but.

Who cares.

Now is the time for wild teens in love zooming through the city.]

[ Ah, they're in trouble. Even if she'd been able to come up with a good excuse for not heading back to class, there's no way she's getting away with this now they've actually been spotted. The chances of this reaching her mother have now reached 100% and yet... Ryoko finds that she doesn't really mind. She never stirs up any trouble, so she thinks she's earned just a little bit of tomfoolery.

She's still laughing as she climbs onto the bike, as out of breath as she is. Really, this is a very low stakes round of rulebreaking in the grand scheme of things but for Ryoko, this is all sorts of wild and exciting. ]

Let's– let's head to the park first. [ They can't exactly talk while he's on the bike, after all. ] We can work things out from there.

[He gives a little forward nod as he's cycling, so he hopes she can see it. He's focusing on the road here...

But after a fun little cycle through the city he comes upon the park, steadily slowing down until they reach a stop just outside of the gate. With one leg out to steady the bike, he looks behind him and gestures for her to get off first.]

[ Still a little out of breath and flushed in the face because of it (and for no other reason, clearly) Ryoko makes her way off the bike and turns to give him a little grin. ]

Do you think they've gotten through to our parents by now?

[He gets off the bike before answering.]

("I hope so. If my Dad wants to work all the time, he deserves a call like this.")

[In all honesty, Eggman probably hears the teacher's voice and immediately thinks it's Maurice. He's probably shocked once he hears it's Morris this time.

But he doesn't really care. Morris rests his bike against the bike stand outside the park gate, clicks it to it, then turns to her again.

And then...

He holds his hand out to her.

They're gonna walk through the park. HOLDING HANDS!!!!!!]

[ Oh, this is even more risque than busting out of school... ]

You know, I can't say I disagree. [ She casually takes his hand, like she wasn't the one dithering like a fool about this sort of thing not even two hours ago. All in all, she's doing a fantastic job of acting like this was totally how she planned this to turn out all along even when it transparently isn't. ] Maybe it'll be a bit of a wakeup call. Or if nothing else, I hope it gives him heartburn.
